Trevor Gorman
Trevor Gorman begins his 13th season as head men’s soccer coach for the University at Albany Great Danes in 2023. Gorman’s early tenure brought a steady improvement to the Great Danes’ program, leading to the establishment of UAlbany men’s soccer as a top program nationally while consistently competing for conference championships and NCAA Tournament berths.
UAlbany made its first appearance in the America East title game since the 2017 season in 2022, falling at #22 New Hampshire 2-0. The Great Danes upset #8 Vermont 1-0 on the road in the semifinals to clinch their spot, their second game in 10 days against the Catamounts without letting up a goal. Before New Hampshire’s first goal in the championship game, UAlbany had not allowed a goal in more than 505 minutes of game time. The Great Danes closed the season playing at their highest level, going unbeaten in nine of their last 12 and seven of their last nine games. Overall, the team suffered just one defeat in the regular season against America East opponents, and claimed a victory over 2022 Ivy League champion Penn. Three UAlbany players, Jackson Finn, Caleb Vallance, and Max Wilhelm earned America East All-Rookie honors. Defensively, the Great Danes recorded nine shutouts in 20 games on the season.
In 2021, the Great Danes once again won 10 games, going 10-7-1 overall. Senior midfielder Haflidi Sigurdarson led the team in points, scoring three goals with three assists, and scored the game-winner in each of UAlbany’s first three victories of the season. The season schedule featured a victory over BIG EAST opponent Villanova, as well as matchups with conference foes New Hampshire and Vermont, who were ranked #9 and RV on the date of their respective games. The Great Danes finished third in the America East and hosted NJIT in the quarterfinal round, falling to the Highlanders 2-1. Two Great Danes, Austin DaSilva and Neophytos Scottis, were named America East All-Conference Second Team, and two others, Jay Alves and Saad Faiz, were named America East All-Rookie. Finally, starting goalkeeper Carlos Tofern, who went 7-7-1 with five shutouts, was named to the America East All-Academic team.
In the 2020-21 season, played during the 2021 spring season, the Great Danes began against ACC foe Syracuse. UAlbany rallied to earn a 1-1 tie in the season opener played offsite at the Afrim’s Sports Dome. The Great Danes took a 4-0 victory over Saint Rose to ignite the team, winning three-of-four games to end the season. UAlbany finished with a 2-1 win over America East Pod B-leading Hartford. Forward Andrew Weiner’s first goal of the season was the game-winner in UAlbany’s one-goal, season-finale victory. In the unprecedented 2020-21 season, the Great Danes went 3-5-1 overall and 2-4 in the America East.
In 2019, the Great Danes began the season against #2 Kentucky in a back-and-forth battle, ending in a hard-fought 3-2 defeat against a top-ranked opponent. The Great Danes surged at the quarter-pole of the season and won seven of eight games. The Great Danes had a stellar performance with 1-0 victory over #14 New Hampshire on Senior Night. Austin DaSilva scored the lone goal that ultimately handed the Wildcats their first loss of the season. The Great Danes once again faced UMass Lowell in the America East Quarterfinals, falling to the Riverhawks 1-0. DaSilva and Konstantinos Louvaris earned All-Conference First Team honors, Adam Malekos was tabbed to the Second Team, Bjarki Leosson earned a spot on the All-Rookie Team, and Andreas Assiotis represented UAlbany on the All-Academic Team. DaSilva paced the Great Danes’ offense the whole season, ultimately earning America East Striker of the Year honors. The honor marked the first time in four years a Great Danes received the major award. The sophomore finished 2019 leading the America East in goals (12) and points (25). Half of DaSilva’s goals were game winners, which ranked first nationally. He also entered the program’s record book, ranking second all-time in the Division I era in goals and fourth in points in a single season. DaSilva and Louvaris then closed out the season earning All-Northeast Region honors.
Several individual records were set during the 2018 season. Danny Vitiello became the all-time career leaders in victories for a goalkeeper. Nico Solabarrieta set single-game program records with four goals and eight points against American in October, while Daniel Krutzen set a single-game program record with four assists in the same match. Solabarrieta and Krutzen finished the season 1-2 in career program assists with 20 and 19, respectively. The Great Danes ended the regular season with a three-game winning streak, starting with a road victory at #22 Cornell. UAlbany shut out each of its final three opponents before meeting four-seed UMass Lowell in the America East quarterfinals, a rematch of the 2017 America East title game. UAlbany fell to the Riverhawks 1-0 to end the season.
Five Great Danes earned America East All-Conference accolades, including Solabarrieta on the First Team. Daniel Krutzen, the 2018 America East Men’s Soccer Fall Scholar-Athlete, joined Solabarrieta in earning All-Region and Scholar-All Region awards.
The 2017 Great Danes continued the success of the 2016 campaign, improving their win total to 14, setting a Division I-era program record. The team won its second consecutive America East title, defeating UMass Lowell in overtime, and advanced in the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season, outlasting Maryland in penalty kicks. Junior midfielder Daniel Krutzen headlined the Great Dane players, bringing home Third Team All-America honors following the season. Additionally, Krutzen and senior forward Afonso Pinheiro earned Scholar All-America honors. Four players, Krutzen, Pinheiro, Carlos Clark, and Nico Solabarrieta, earned Scholar All-Region awards, and Krutzen, Pinheiro, and Clark each earned All-Region accolades. Following the season, Pinheiro, who graduated as UAlbany’s all-time leading points scorer, was invited to participate in the MLS Player Combine, and was later selected 71st overall by D.C. United in the 2018 MLS Superdraft.
The 2016 Great Danes put forth their most successful season in Division I era history to date. One year removed from winning the America East regular-season title, UAlbany took the next step by winning the program’s first-ever America East championship, defeating Hartford 1-0 at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium. Afterwards, the Danes drew the #14 seed in their first-ever NCAA Tournament, and hosted Boston College in the second round after a first round bye. UAlbany dispatched the Eagles 3-0, marking the third consecutive postseason game in which the team did not allow a goal. The season ended in the Sweet 16 at tournament #3 Clemson. Over the team’s final 14 games, the Great Danes outscored their opponents 30-10.
The highlight of the 2016 regular season was a 2-1 home upset over then #3 Syracuse, who was the highest-ranked opponent any Great Dane team had defeated at home. The tight 1-1 tie was broken in the second half by senior forward Jonathan Interiano, who scored his first goal in more than a year.
The team’s 13 wins in 2016 were a Division I-era program best. The team matched the program record of 39 goals, and scored 119 points for second-most in program history for a single season. Additionally, the team earned program highs in RPI (12), strength of schedule (5), and program-best places in all three major national year-end polls (NSCAA: 17, CSN: 18, TDS, 12).
Afonso Pinheiro became the program’s career leader in points, and the program’s Division I-era leader in goals scored. Pinehiro, Bernardo Mattos, and Keith Traut each earned spots on the NSCAA All-East Teams, and five Great Danes took home America East All-Conference honors, with Mattos also being named as the America East Tournament Most Outstanding Player.
The 2015 Purple & Gold squad earned the program's first America East regular season crown after going 5-2-0 in league play. The Purple & Gold posted a high-powered offense behind Afonso Pinheiro and Leo Melgar up front, averaging 5.43 points per game against conference opponents to lead the America East. Defensively, UAlbany also led the America East, conceding just six goals. After leading the 2015 team to 10 wins for the first time since 2008, an improvement of six wins from the previous season, Gorman and his staff were named America East Coaching Staff of the Year. On the field, Afonso Pinheiro’s league-leading 26 points and 11 goals earned America East Striker of the Year and NSCAA All-East First Team honors. Philip Persson and Keith Traut also earned All-Conference First Team honors.
With an exciting recruiting class for the 2014 season, the Purple & Gold saw one of its best offensive seasons in program history. Led by America East Co-Rookie of the Year Afonso Pinheiro, the Great Danes totaled 59 points, the second-highest scoring offense under Gorman. Earning hosting rights for the America East Quarterfinals as the four-seed, UAlbany fell to Vermont 2-1 at Casey Stadium.
Individually, Pinheiro became the first league Rookie of the Year all-time for the program. He was the first UAlbany player to earn a major conference award since 2008 with seven goals and two assists, including two game-winners. Pinheiro was a unanimous selection to the America East All-Rookie Team, and was placed on the Second Team by the league's coaches. Senior defender Dominic McGarr was also selected to the Second Team, as well as the America East All-Academic squad.
In 2013, Gorman led UAlbany to its first program victory over a nationally-ranked opponent, a 2-1 against #22 Fairleigh Dickinson at home. The win was the first for the Purple & Gold in Casey Stadium. UAlbany went 3-3-1 against America East opponents, their best record in league play since joining the conference. The Great Danes beat Vermont 5-1 in the America East quarterfinals, marking the team's highest offensive output in five years, and nearly upset #6 UMBC in the America East semifinals, but fell 2-1 in Baltimore.
In 2012, the Great Danes appeared in the America East Conference Tournament for consecutive seasons since 2005-2006. UAlbany hosted a home postseason conference game for the first time since 2008. Gorman's squad saw an improvement in conference play, going 3-4-0 and finishing fifth (finished 6th and tallied a 1-3-3 record in 2011). Freshmen Anthony Rozzano, Philip Persson and Tim Allen were named to the America East All-Rookie Team.
In his first season at the helm in 2011, Gorman brought the Great Danes to the postseason for the first time since 2008. UAlbany went into the America East Conference postseason as the six seed, and defeated Vermont in the quarterfinal round to advance in the postseason tournament for the first time in program history. The Great Danes saw their goal production almost double in 2011, scoring 22 goals (13 in 2010). UAlbany finished the season 6-10-3 and 1-3-3 in league play.
Before joining UAlbany, Gorman served one season as an assistant coach at Wright State in 2010, and three seasons, 2007-09, as an assistant coach at Dartmouth. The Big Green won one Ivy League title and appeared in three-straight NCAA Tournaments during Gorman’s tenure.
Gorman played collegiately at Penn State University, where he earned his undergraduate degree in Business Management in 2005. He earned his graduate degree in Exercise Sport Science, with an emphasis in Sports Administration, from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 2007.
Gorman holds a United Soccer Coaches Premier Diploma and a UEFA ‘A’ diploma.
