Brianne Smithson

Brianne Smithson has been the head coach of the Polar Bear women's soccer team since 2012.


She enjoyed immediate success at Bowdoin, reaching the NCAA Tournament in her first four campaigns. In her first season at Bowdoin, Smithson lead the Polar Bears to one of the finest seasons in school history with an 11-4-4 mark. The nationally ranked Polar Bears advanced to the second round of NCAA Tournament play following an appearance in the NESCAC Championship with Smithson earning Conference Co-Coach of the Year honors. The Polar Bears have repeated that success in 2013, 2014, and 2015, receiving NCAA bids every season and continue to be among the top teams in the region, winning 65% of their matches under Smithson.


At Bowdoin, she has guided multiple All-NESCAC and All-New England players in addition to four All-Americans during her tenure. In addition, Bowdoin has consistently ranked among the top in the nation in both the United Soccer Coaches' Team Ethics and Sportsmanship Awards and Team Academic honors.


Prior to Bowdoin, Smithson led St. Mary's (Md.) to three Capital Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Championship Tournament finals (2006, 2008, and 2011) in six seasons at the helm of the Seahawks, collecting the school's first-ever CAC championship crown in 2008 and earning CAC Coach of the Year honors that same year. In 2008, Smithson was named the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Mid-Atlantic Region Coach of the Year after helping the Seahawks achieve their first-ever NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship Tournament berth.


Smithson also served as the department's Senior Woman Administrator and as the liaison between athletics and the Office of Advancement. She spearheaded the formation of the Seahawk Alliance, the department's booster organization, and was the athletic representative at the newly formed Staff Senate.

Jane Walsh

Jane Walsh was named assistant coach for the Bowdoin women's soccer team in the spring of 2022. Most recently the head coach at Salve Regina University for the last six seasons, Walsh turned around a program that had won six games in the two years prior to her arrival in 2015 to a team that made six consecutive postseason appearances and winning 38 matches during her tenure. During Walsh’s time as head coach, Salve boasted multiple Commonwealth Coast Conference Rookie of the Year recipients and All-CCC Team members.


Prior to Salve, Walsh coached for Bruno United FC (Providence, RI) while pursuing a career in strength and conditioning, and physical therapy. A 2013 graduate of Keene State College, Walsh was a defender that helped lead the Owls to a stellar 45-23-6 overall record in her playing career. At Keene State, Walsh earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Health Science and a specialization in Exercise Science.

Scott Wiercinski

Scott Wiercinski was named head coach of the Bowdoin men's soccer team in March of 2013. Over the course of his tenure, Bowdoin has remained one of the top teams in the region and nationally, winning a pair of NESCAC titles, posting winning records in every year as head coach and reaching the postseason in all but one season.


In just his second season, Wiercinski led the Polar Bears to their first-ever NESCAC Championship in his second season at the helm and collected an NCAA First Round Tournament win in 2014. The Polar Bears became back-to-back NESCAC Champions with another tournament run in 2015 when he was named the NESCAC Coach of the Year.


A native of Brunswick and graduate of Brunswick High School, Wiercinski returned to Maine after seven years as head coach at the University of Chicago. His resume also includes assistant coaching jobs at Brown and Bowdoin. He is a 1999 graduate of Middlebury. Prior to Bowdoin, Wiercinski was head men's soccer coach at University of Chicago for seven seasons, winning 58 games and the 2009 UAA Championship. Prior to his arrival at Chicago, Wiercinski spent five years as an assistant coach at Brown University from 2001-05. During that time, Brown compiled a 41-31-13 overall record, collected three Ivy League championships, and earned two NCAA Division I postseason berths.


Wiercinski broke into coaching in 2000 with Bowdoin, where he helped former head coach Brian Ainscough lead the Polar Bears to a 14-2-2 record. A as a student at Middlebury College, Wiercinski was a four-year letter winner and two-time All-New England Small College Athletic Conference goalkeeper for the Panthers. He helped lead Middlebury to a 48-10-3 overall record and four NCAA Division III tournament appearances from 1995-98.

Andrew Banadda

Andrew Banadda was named assistant coach for the Bowdoin men's soccer team in the spring of 2021.


A 2010 graduate of Middlebury College, Banadda joins Scott Wiercinski’s coaching staff following ten years of coaching in the middle Atlantic. A native of Gaithersburg, Md., Banadda enjoyed a stellar career at Middlebury, where he helped the Panthers win the 2007 national championship by earning All-Tournament honors. He returned to his home region, where he has coached in numerous capacities, including as the Developmental Phase Director at Potomac Soccer Club, Assistant Director of the Soccer Program at Arrington Training & Development, and as an assistant coach for the Washington Adventist University men’s soccer team. Banadda owns a U.S. Soccer “C” License and NSCAA Premier Diploma and is an active member of the United Soccer Coaches Association, where he is a member of the Black Soccer Coaches Advocacy Group.
