Year-by-Year Season Recaps


2022: King finished the season with a 1-12-3 overall mark, going 1-8-3 in Conference Carolinas matches. The Tornado posted a three-match unbeaten streak to start conference play with draws against Southern Wesleyan and Erskine around a 1-0 win over Francis Marion. However, the Tornado only posted one more draw over the remainder of the season. Maggie Danroth, Erin Peters and Veronica Roach all earned College Sports Communicators Academic All-District.


2021: The Tornado won two of their first three matches of the season, including a 2-1 overtime win at regional rival Tusculum. It was the first win for King over Tusculum since 2008. King finished the regular season with a 3-8-1 record, giving them a ninth place finish in the Conference Carolinas standings. Overall the Tornado finished 4-10-1. Veronica Roach was selected Conference Carolinas Player of the Week on October 26.


2020-21: In what was a different year, competing in the spring due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Tornado finished 1-6-2 overall with a 1-4-2 record in league play. King defeated Converse on March 14 for their first win of the season. The Tornado also played to draws with Erskine, 0-0 and Lees-McRae, 1-1.


Prior to King

Shaw has more than 25 years of coaching experience, spending 14 years as the coaching education director for the Virginia Youth Soccer Association. In that time, his responsibilities included, managing the delivery of US Soccer's Coaching Education Licenses, coach, player and club development. He has also served the state as a head coach for Virginia's Olympic Development Programs' girl's teams, in regional events, Regional ODP Championships and on international tours.


Shaw has also been a national instructor for the United States Soccer Federation, teaching the US Soccer B, C and Instructor's License, guiding coaches both on the field and in the classroom. Along with that, over the last five years, Shaw has served as an East Coast Talent ID Scout for US Soccer's girls' youth national teams. He has coached training sessions at national training centers and identified players for the East Coach National Team Training Pools.


Prior to that, Shaw has college coaching experience as an assistant coach at Western Illinois University and American University, as well as serving as the head coach at Sweet Briar College. Shaw spent 10 years leading the soccer camp program as head coach for Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). He also comes with United Soccer League experience and has been the Director of Coaching for a number of youth clubs.


Personal


Shaw earned his Bachelor's degree from Carleton University in 1990 and his Master's in 1999 from Western Illinois University.


"Paul and his wife Michelle have been married for 26 years. They live in Johnson City, have three daughters, Madalyn 22, Jaiden 20 and Kyra 16. They also have two dogs loved by the women's soccer team, Foster an airdale and Ochi, a shih-tzu."

Bridget Frei

Frei joined the Tornado staff in April of 2023.


Frei holds a US Soccer B License and a US Youth Soccer National Youth License. For the last 12 years, she was a staff coach and program assistant at Ela Soccer Club in Chicago. Her role included managing college recruitment, administrating youth tournaments and coaching travel teams. She also has Olympic Development Program experience in the Midwest region as a staff coach.


As a college athlete, she was an all-conference defender at Saint Mary's College in Notre Dame, Ind., where she captained the team in her junior and senior year. In 2012, she completed her Masters in Sport Leadership from North Central College.


Frei and her husband Jake, arrives to Park field with their dogs, Ted and Niko.

Mark Bell

Mark joined the Tornado staff on March 1, 2022 following six seasons at Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy, Mass. In total, he brings 25 years of collegiate head coaching experience to the Tornado.

2022: The Tornado posted a 2-11-2 overall record, going 1-9-1 in Conference Carolinas play in Bell's first season. Joshua Bessinger, Riley Moore and Marcell Szekeres all earned College Sports Communicators Academic All-District honors.


Prior to King


In 2021, Bell led Eastern Nazarene to the program’s first ever New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) regular season championship. That success came on the heels of the 2019 season, when Bell led the Lions to a 16-4 record and an NECC postseason championship. He earned NECC Coach of the Year honors following the 2019 season, which also included the program’s first-ever berth in the NCAA Division III National Championship.


In his final two full seasons at Eastern Nazarene, Bell led the Lions to a total of 29 wins. Prior to Bell’s arrival in 2016, the Lions managed just 26 wins in the previous five years.


Prior to his time at Eastern Nazarene, Bell spent 19 seasons as the head coach at Cornerstone University in Grand Rapids, Mich., where he amassed 180 wins and a .560 winning percentage. He led Cornerstone to 13 winning seasons, including five Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) championships, and was a five-time WHAC Coach of the Year.


Personal


Bell earned his bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science from the University of Illinois-Chicago, and his Master of Education in Athletic Administration from Endicott College. He holds his National and Advanced coaching diplomas from the United Soccer Coaches Association.


Mark’s wife, Dr. Catherine Mueller-Bell is a Professor of Counseling and a Missionary of Counselor Education. They have two adult sons, Zachariah, who lives in Australia and Joshua who lives in California.

Louis Sharp

Sharp joined the Tornado staff prior to the 2021 season as a graduate assistant coach. He is working on his Master of Education at King while working with the men's soccer team.

Year-By-Year Season Recaps


2021: The Tornado took a pair of shutout wins early in the season over Concord and Emory & Henry. However, the Tornado struggled the remainder of the season, finishing with a 2-11-2 overall record, including a 0-10-1 mark in Conference Carolinas play. King had seven individuals earn academic All-Conference Carolinas.


Prior to King


Sharp comes to Bristol from Bethel University (Tenn.) where he played soccer and graduated with a degree in physical education. Prior to that, Sharp attended Pratt College in Kansas under a FuturePro USA scholarship. While there the learned about the many areas of coaching, including nutrition, first aid and personal health. Sharp coached the Eltham Town U12 football team and earned his FA level 1 goalkeeping and outfield badges. He graduated from Bethel University (Tenn.) in 2020 with a degree in physical education.
