Kyle Schmid

Associate Head Coach Kyle Schmid enters the 2021 season with the Lions poised to build on the success already present within the program. During the 2020-21 campaign, Schmid and the Lions had a 6-0-3 record and Noel Caliskan was named WCC Offensive Player of the Year, Gerardo Lopez Defender of the Year, and Jacob Jackson Goalkeeper of the Year while 10 LMU players received All-Conference accolades. Additionally, Schmid and the staff were named West Region Staff of the Year by the United Soccer Coaches and finished the season ranked No. 17.

Schmid most recently served as an assistant coach at CSU Fullerton for three seasons. During his tenure at CSUF, the Titans won the Big West regular season and conference tournament championships in 2015 and 2017, also appearing twice in the NCAA playoffs. Schmid was instrumental in building several top 25 recruiting classes (TopDrawerSoccer.com), as well as sending several players to the professional ranks during and after his time in Fullerton.

Notably, Schmid recruited and mentored numerous players who received All Big West Conference accolades, including Big West freshman team of the year, Big West Conference midfielder of the year and Big West Conference tournament MVP. During the 2017 season, Schmid helped place two players on the NSCAA All Far West Region team and one on the NSCAA All American roster.

Schmid has also held assistant coaching positions at UC Riverside and CSU Northridge while gaining experience at the club and youth levels with various programs as well. He is no stranger to LMU, as he worked with the Lions as a volunteer assistant coach in 2013-14.

During his tenure at UC Riverside, the program reached unprecedented heights. In 2013 and 2014, the Highlanders achieved back to back Big West Tournament appearances, winning the 2014 Big West regular season championship, the first in school history.

At Riverside, Schimd coached and mentored MLS SuperDraft selections Aaron Long, picked #36 overall to the Portland Timbers in 2014, Otis Earl picked #15 overall to FC Dallas in 2015 and Michael Salazar picked #24 overall by the Montreal Impact in 2016. Notably, Aaron Long was named MLS Defender of the Year in 2018 with the New York Red Bulls and has recently become a consistent selection to the Senior US Men’s National Team, earning 5 caps in the last two years.

"Kyle Schmid is a fantastic addition for the staff of LMU men's soccer," Lions head coach Paul Krumpe said. "He knows the campus as he has been here as a volunteer in the past and has spent the past several years developing his craft at UC Riverside and CSU Fullerton. Kyle has already hit the ground running and is up to speed in almost every aspect of LMU soccer. I look forward to watching Kyle help us win a WCC Championship this season."

Schmid graduated from UC Irvine, earning a bachelor's degree in social ecology with a concentration in psychology and social behavior. He played in 56 career games for the Anteaters and was an All-Big West Second Team Selection in 2008. In the same year, he was part of UCI's team that won the Big West Championship and made it to the Round of 16 in the NCAA Division I Tournament, which marked the first NCAA tournament appearance in school history.

"I want to thank Paul Krumpe and the administration at LMU for this incredible opportunity to be part of the Lion athletics family," Schmid said. "Paul and Mike [Oseguera] have laid a great foundation during their time here, and I am excited to get started on this journey to help build something special with this staff for many years to come."

"I'd also like to thank my wife, Rachel, and my family for all the support they have given me throughout my coaching career," Schmid added.

Schmid resides in Orange, Ca. with his wife, Rachel, and two sons, Elliott and Arthur.
