Neil Hilton

Mid-America Christian Athletics is proud to announce that Neil Hilton will be taking the reins of the MACU men's soccer program for the 2023 season.


Hilton was elevated to the position after serving as an assistant coach at MACU over the past two seasons under previous head coach Danny Frid.


Over the past two years, the Evangels have become one of the elite programs in the NAIA, amassing an astonishing 38-3-3 overall record, including an unblemished 15-0-3 record in Sooner Athletic Conference play to win both the league's regular season and tournament titles in 2021 and 2022.


MACU wrapped up the 2022 campaign with a 19-2-2 overall record and achieved many firsts, including reaching the No. 1 ranking in the NAIA Top 25 Coaches' Poll for the first time in program history and just the second team in the SAC to ever reach the top spot. The Evangels also won their third straight SAC Tournament title after putting together a dominant 3-0 victory over Science & Arts on their home turf on Nov. 11.


The Evangels hosted their first NAIA Tournament First and Second Round at the Dill Soccer Field from Nov. 17-19 as well as earned their first ever No. 1 overall seed at the NAIA Tournament's final site while competing in the quarterfinal round for the first time ever in Decatur, Alabama on Dec. 1. MACU earned the top-seed distinction after defeating Oklahoma Wesleyan 2-0 in its second round match.


In his first year with the program in 2021, Mid-America Christian put together its first ever undefeated run through the regular season as the Evangels amassed a 16-0-1 record before starting a strong SAC Tournament run. MACU outscored its opponents 10-0 in the SAC tourney as the program claimed its third tournament title after defeating Southwestern Christian 2-0 in the title tilt on Nov. 11. The Evangels concluded the year with its winningest season in program history with a 19-1-1 (.929) overall mark.


Before coming to MACU, Hilton served as the varsity boys' soccer coach at Yukon High School. In his last season with the Millers in 2022, Hilton led the team to an 8-4 record and was named the Oklahoma 6A Boys Soccer Coach of the Year. Hilton led the Yukon soccer program since the 2013-2014 season.


Hilton brings some strong familiarity competing at the NAIA and Sooner Athletic Conference level to MACU after playing for then SAC member Oklahoma Christian from 2008-2011. After graduating from OC in 2012, Hilton served as an assistant coach for the women's soccer program at his alma mater from 2012-14 before moving over to serve as an assistant for the men's program from 2015-19.


As a player with the Eagles, Hilton was one of the best in program's history. A four-year starter at Oklahoma Christian, Hilton earned All-SAC First Team honors in 2011 and Second Team acclaim in 2010. Competing in 68 games, Hilton finished his OC career with 20 goals and 25 assists while attempting 184 shots from the midfield position. During his senior campaign, Hilton tied the program's single-season assist record after recording 11 dimes.


Hilton earned his Bachelor's Degree in Sports Management in 2012 and Master's Degree in Business Administration in 2014 from Oklahoma Christian University as well as a Master's in Special Education from Southern Nazarene University in 2021. Hilton holds a US Soccer Class D and Class C Coaching License as well as a USC Soccer National Diploma.

James Roberson

James Roberson will be entering his second season as the lead assistant coach of the MACU men's soccer program and his fifth season overall for the 2023 campaign.


During his tenure, Roberson has helped guide MACU to four of its most successful seasons in program history. In 2022, the Evangels reached new heights as the program finished the year with a 19-2-2 overall record and at one point earned the No. 1 ranking in the NAIA, becoming just the second program in the history of the SAC to be the top-ranked team in the nation. MACU finished with a 7-0-2 league mark to earn the program's second-straight SAC regular season championship before eventually defeating Science & Arts 3-0 in the SAC Championship game to earn the squad's third-straight tourney title. The Evangels also hosted the program's first ever NAIA Tournament First and Second Round, eventually defeating Oklahoma Wesleyan 2-0 in the second round match to earn the program's first ever No. 1 seed at the NAIA Championships final site.


During the 2021 fall campaign, the Evangels put together a program-defining season, notching a record-setting 19-1-1 (.929) overall record while also winning both the Sooner Athletic Conference regular season and tournament titles for the first time program history. MACU picked up its third SAC tourney title after defeating Southwestern Christian 2-0 at the Dill Soccer Field on Nov. 11.


In the split 2020-21 season, the Evangels went 15-4-2 (.750), which included a 6-1-1 (.812) mark in Sooner Athletic Conference play. Mid-America Christian won its second ever SAC Tournament Championship with a 3-0 win following a postgame shootout after playing to a 0-0 draw at Evangel Field on Apr. 9.


The Evangels also advanced to the NAIA final site during the postseason tournament after winning its Opening Round regional. In the NAIA Opening Round, MACU defeated No. 14 Morningside (Iowa) 2-2 (4-2 in shootout) and No. 8 Bethel (Tenn.) 3-2 in double overtime.


In Roberson's first season, the MACU men's soccer team set the program record for wins in a season, closing out with a 20-3-1 (.854) overall record and went 7-1-1 (.833) against SAC competition.


The Evangels ended the 2019 campaign with their first ever NCCAA National Championship, defeating Grace (Ind.) 5-0 on Dec. 7.


Roberson came to MACU after serving as a men's soccer graduate assistant coach for his alma mater, Southwestern Christian from 2017-2018. In his two seasons as the GA coach, the Eagles won back-to-back NCCAA Division I National Championships.


Roberson competed with SCU from the 2013-16 seasons, winning the 2016 NCCAA Division I National Championship, the first of three straight national championships for the Eagles program. Roberson competed as a defenseman for the Eagles.


Roberson earned his Bachelor's of Science degree in Sports Management from Southwestern Christian in May 2017 and his Master's of Arts in Leadership from Southwestern Christian in May 2019. Roberson holds a US Class C license.
