Sherrill Smith

Sherrill Smith is entering his eighth season as head coach of the Midway University women’s soccer program in 2022-23.


During his first seven seasons at the helm, Smith has led the Eagles to 44 victories. Smith has seen 11 players All-Conference honors from the River States, while he’s also seen 62 RSC Scholar-Athletes, and 40 NAIA Daktronics Scholar-Athletes.


Not only has he had 11 players earn All-Conference honors, but he’s also coached the RSC Player of the Year and RSC Offensive Player of the Year in Brynn Bradley. The 2020 season also saw Bradley earn NAIA Honorable Mention All-American honors and Scholar All-America honors from the United Soccer Coaches.


In 2021, Smith was selected as the 2020-21 River States Conference Coach of the Character Award winner. The award is given annually to a head coach who has been outstanding in embracing the five core values of the NAIA Champions of Character program using methods of teaching character through sport and in community leadership through volunteering or service.


Smith came to Midway in April 2015 after spending 30 years of coaching at the high school level in Kentucky. He spent 26 years as the head coach of the boys’ soccer program at Frankfort High School. During his tenure, Smith compiled 264 career victories en route to becoming one of the top-ten winningest coaches in Kentucky.


In 2014, he earned several coaching honors after a successful season. He received the Great Lakes Coach of the Year for small schools by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), the Kentucky High School Soccer Coaches Association (KHSSCA) Coach of the Year and the Central Kentucky Soccer Officials Association (CKSOA) Coach of the Year.


Also, in 2005, Smith was awarded the KHSSCA Coach of the Year award.


Smith also led Frankfort High School to two district championships, while finishing as district runner-up nine times during his tenure. His teams also advanced to the All “A” State Soccer Cup four times.


Smith has also coached rec and select soccer teams as well as high school boys’ and girls’ tennis, boys’ basketball, and baseball. He has had several players receive statewide awards and several others have gone on to successfully play soccer and tennis at the collegiate level.


In addition to coaching, Smith has experience in athletics administration. He was Commissioner of the Kentucky All “A” State Soccer Cup Tournament from 1999-2012, has served on the Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) Soccer Committee and has worked with the NSCAA.


After a 33-year career in public education, Smith retired as the Assistant Superintendent for Frankfort Independent Schools in March 2015.


Smith and his wife, Ruth, reside in nearby Frankfort, Kentucky. They have four children and five grandchildren.

Tim Wolz

Tim Wolz begins his seventh season as head coach of the Midway University men’s soccer program in 2022-23.


Wolz became the first-ever head coach of the men’s soccer program at Midway in June 2016 when he started the program from scratch.


Thus far in his six seasons at Midway, Wolz has led his team to 34 victories with two appearances in the River States Conference Men’s Soccer Tournament. In his second season in 2017, Wolz led the Eagles to a runner-up finish in the RSC Tournament.


Over his coaching career thus far, Wolz has had a player earn Player of the Year honors and has had 55 players earn All-Conference honors. He's also had 143 players earn Academic All-Conference honors and 11 earn Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors, while he has coached four players who have been named Academic All-Americans.


Wolz came to Midway after spending six seasons as the head men’s soccer coach at St. Catharine College. His best season with the Patriots came in 2014 when he led the team to a 15-6 record and a runner-up finish in the Mid-South Conference Tournament.


Because of his team’s success in the 2014, Wolz was voted by his peers as the MSC Men’s Soccer Coach of the Year. He was also named the NAIA South Region Coach of the Year in 2014 as well.


He is the only coach in Mid-South Conference history to win Coach of the Year for both the men (2014) and women (2003).


During his tenure at St. Catharine, Wolz had a player earn All-American honors and Player of the Year honors, he had six players earn All-Conference honors, and he had 28 players earn Academic All-Conference honors.


Prior to his time at St. Catharine, Wolz was the women’s soccer coach at Coker College in Hartsville, South Carolina. His two years at Coker College came after a stint as an assistant men’s soccer coach at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida.


Wolz got his start in coaching at Cumberland College (now University of the Cumberlands) where he was with the women’s soccer program for eight seasons. He first served as an assistant for three years before serving as the head coach for five seasons.


During his tenure he became second in all time wins at the school and he was named Mid-South Conference Women’s Soccer Coach of the Year in 2003.


Wolz has also served as an assistant coach for the Louisville Lightning, a Professional Indoor Soccer Team in Louisville, Kentucky. The team finished as Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL) Open Cup Runner-Up and the staff was named the PASL Staff of the Year in their inaugural season in 2009-10.


Wolz holds a Bachelor of Arts in History from Cumberland College and a Master of Science from Western Kentucky University.


Tim and his wife, Stacie, have three kids, Logan, Grace, and Davis.
