Mike Korhonen

Mike Korhonen was appointed as the fifth head coach in the history of Northwood’s women’s soccer program in April 2023. He enters the position previously being an assistant/goalkeeper coach under previous head coach Chelsea Hunter (2018-23).

Joining Hunter's staff in 2018, Korhonen and the Timberwolves have gone 32-28-5 overall with a 23-18-4 record in conference play over the last four seasons, including the first winning season for Northwood since 2004 in the 2021 fall season, a 10-9 overall record. The team also produced winning seasons in each of the last two years, marking the first time since 1998-99 Northwood had back-to-back winning seasons.

The 2019 season was a breakthrough for the program. The Timberwolves improved from two wins overall in 2018 to a 9-9-1 record. NU also went 5-4 in the GLIAC, marking the first time since 2002 that Northwood had a winning record in conference play.

During his time as an assistant for Northwood University men’s soccer program (2016-18), he was the Head Elite Development and Goalkeepers Coach for the Timberwolves. During this time, Korhonen aided the Timberwolves in winning the 2017 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season and tournament championship.

Prior to Northwood, he was the head men’s coach at Lake Fenton High School (2012-14). In 2014, Korhonen led Lake Fenton to its most wins in school history.

Korhonen also has coached multiple high school and club programs, including Michigan Arrows Club (2010-15), Michigan Nationals Club (2015-20), as well as Powers Catholic High School (2006-12) and (2012-18) which included three Michigan state titles.
