Gretta Macdonald

Gretta (Arvesen) Macdonald begins her ninth season as the head coach of the soccer program at St. Cloud State University in 2022.


A total of 33 Huskies have earned All-NSIC accolades during the Macdonald era at St. Cloud State and her teams have also produced 94 Academic All-NSIC award winners during her tenure on campus - including 16 in 2019.


The Huskies have advanced to the NSIC playoffs five times since 2015 under the leadership of Macdonald, and advanced to the NSIC semifinals in 2019. St. Cloud State's Maria Witte received the prestigious NCAA Women's Enhancement Graduate Scholarship in 2019.


Macdonald made a quick impact on the program at SCSU, which included a nine win season in her second season with the Huskies in 2015. SCSU also returned to the NSIC playoffs in 2015, and has also earned bids to the NSIC tournament in 2016 and 2018. Under Macdonald's leadership, SCSU charted eight NSIC victories in 2015 and 2018.


The Huskies hit record numbers in 2019 under Macdonald's leadership. SCSU posted a 12-5-3 overall record and a 10-3-2 NSIC record, which set a new team standard for most conference wins in a season and was the second most wins charted by the Huskies in a single season.


Prior to her move to SCSU in 2014, Macdonald was an assistant soccer coach at Central Michigan University, an NCAA Division I institution. Her responsibilities included Director of Internal Operations and Director of the CMU Soccer Academy.


At Central Michigan, Macdonald assisted in analyzing, developing and implementing the women’s soccer program. As Director of Internal Operations she was responsible for coordinating academic support, strength and conditioning, compliance, sports information, sports science, marketing, camps and clinics, facilities and equipment. As Director of CMU Soccer Academy, she was responsible for programming Elite ID, Overnight and Day Camps and Soccerfest.


Before joining the Central Michigan soccer staff, Macdonald was on the soccer staff at Minnesota State University, Mankato, serving as an assistant coach from July 2008 to January 2013, and taking on the interim head coach assignment from January to April 2013. While at Minnesota State, she also served as the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) liasion and an assistant professor and instructor in the New Student and Family Programs Department and Human Performance Department.


As the assistant coach for the Mavericks, Arvesen was the recruiting coordinator, managed and directed team operations, supervised academic progress, assisted with budget management, directed MSU Soccer Academy camp programs, directed and implemented community service and outreach events, and assisted with the development and implementation of program-level fundraising.


The Minnesota State University soccer program made four NCAA tournament appearances during her coaching stint, notched 74 wins, won two Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) tournament titles, had five All-Americans and three Capital One Academic All-America team members, earned five straight National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) team academic awards and back-to-back NSCAA Silver Team Sportsmanship and Ethics Awards. Macdonald was involved in numerous community and volunteer activities in Michigan and Minnesota, and participated in professional development programs since 2007.


A native of Pine Springs, Minn., Macdonald played collegiate soccer at Creighton University from 2003 to 2007, earning four letters. She was on the SAAC Committee and Team Leadership Council. The Bluejays won two Missouri Valley Conference Championships and made two NCAA tournament appearances.


After graduating from Creighton with a degree in mass communication and public relations, Macdonald was a graduate assistant coach at South Dakota State University for the 2007-08 season. She has a master’s degree in educational leadership from Minnesota State University.

Jade Smith

Jade Smith begins her fourth season as an assistant coach with the soccer program at St. Cloud State University in 2022.


As a coach, Smith served as the Technical Director for the Magic Soccer Football Club in Bismarck, N.D. from 2016 to 2019 and was a coach with the Olympic Development Program (ODP) for North Dakota and South Dakota and also served on the staff of the Region 2 ODP. In 2018 and 2019, Smith was a varsity assistant coach for the soccer team at Legacy High School in Bismarck, N.D. and worked as a student assistant coach at Mary during the summer of 2018. Smith currently holds her United Soccer Federation National C license.


At St. Cloud State, Smith is working toward a graduate degree in higher education administration and sports management.


A 2018 graduate of the University of Mary, Smith was a standout four-year player for the Marauders from 2015 to 2018. She scored 11 goals, nine assists and 31 points during her collegiate career at Mary and was named to the All-NSIC team in 2017. The University of Mary Inspirational Athlete of the Year in 2017, Smith served as a team captain during her junior and senior seasons and also gained Academic All-NSIC accolades during her collegiate tenure. She majored in coaching and sports studies with a minor in sports management at Mary.


Smith is a native of Rochester, England and played soccer for the West Ham Ladies Football Club in the Premiere League prior. She was a five-time Kent schools cross country champion and has competed in triathlons.

Sean Holmes

Holmes entered his third season with the Huskies in 2022 where the program saw its first ever postseason play in the Great Lake Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Holmes had three athletes earn All-GLIAC awards and 15 earn GLIAC academic honors.


Holmes first official season on the field was 2021 since the 2020 season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Holmes had three athletes earn All-GLIAC awards and ten earn GLIAC academic honors.


Holmes served as the head soccer coach at Drake University from 1998 to 2015. His teams at Drake consistently advanced to the Missouri Valley Conference playoffs, won the MVC championship in 2009, advanced to the NCAA Division I Elite Eight that same season and won 141 games in 17 seasons.


Prior to his time at Drake, Holmes was an assistant coach at the University of Evansville from 1994 to 1998 and was the head soccer coach at Baker University, where he charted a 78-26-2 record. Holmes helped Baker win three conference titles and three district titles in five years and he was named a district/conference coach of the year four times at Baker.


A graduate of Carleton University (Ottawa, Ontario), Holmes received his master's degree from the University of Kansas and holds a U.S. Soccer Federation "A" level coaching license. In addition to his collegiate soccer experience, Holmes has worked with the Region II Olympic Development Program and the Kansas Olympic Development Program along with serving as a MLS scout for the Minnesota United FC.


He played college soccer at Carleton University, where he served as a team captain and earned All-Ontario honors. Holmes later played professional soccer in the Canadian Soccer League for the National Capital Pioneers.


He most recently served as the head varsity boys soccer coach at Theodore Roosevelt High School and coached with the West Des Moines Soccer Club and Sporting Iowa.

Zach Neiberger

Zach Neiberger enters his third season as the lead assistant with St. Cloud State Men's Soccer in 2023. Appointed in July 2020 as the first assistant on the Huskies' inaugural coaching staff, Neiberger helped build the first NCAA DII Men's Soccer program in the state of Minnesota.


In 2023, Neiberger helped SCSU achieve a program record in total points and conference points as the Huskies went on to host their first conference playoff game in program history.


Under Neiberger's tutelage, eight student-athletes have earned All-GLIAC honors as Emmanuel Iwe (2021), Eddie Saydee (2021), Andres Garcia (2021), Philip Caputo (2022, 23), Nolan Pratumwon (2022), Dylan DeBaldo (2023), Vukota Mastilovic (2023) and Owen Worsdell (2023) each garnered all-conference attention in the program's first three seasons. Iwe went on to be selected in the 2022 Major League Soccer Super Draft and is currently playing professionally with Minnesota United FC. Throughout his young club and collegiate coaching career, Neiberger helped develop three future MLS Super Draft selections.


Prior to his appointment at St. Cloud State, Neiberger spent two seasons as an assistant coach at NCAA DIII program Hamline after his promising playing career was cut short due to multiple concussions. Neiberger has previously coached club with with Minneapolis United Soccer Club and was a Lead Coach for the MNUFC pre-academy. Currently, Neiberger is the Assistant Director of Coaching for Central Minnesota Youth Soccer Association. Originally from Minneapolis, the Minneapolis Southwest standout and prep All-American was named to the IMG Academy 150 Player Pool in 2014 as one of the top 150 players in the country per TopDrawerSoccer. Neiberger went on to play collegiately at NCAA DI programs San Diego State and UW-Milwaukee.


Neiberger holds a USSF C License and is a current applicant for the USSF B License.


Neiberger earned a B.A. in Communication Studies from St. Cloud State University and is currently pursuing a M.S. in Sports Management.
