Brandi Fontaine

Charlotte 49ers Director of Athletics Mike Hill announced the hiring of two-time Big South Coach of the Year Brandi Fontaine as the 49ers' women's soccer coach on May 19, 2022. Fontaine, who led High Point University to unprecedented heights in four seasons as head coach, becomes the fifth head coach for the 49ers' women's soccer program.

Fontaine led the Panthers to a pair of unbeaten Big South regular-season championships, a Big South Conference Tournament title, the 2021 NCAA Tournament and the highest rankings in program history.

Charlotte has reached the Conference USA Championship game in three of the last six years, winning the league title in 2016 and notching runner-up finishes in 2017 and the spring 2021 campaign. The 49ers, who have earned five NCAA Tournament bids in their history, will host the 2022 C-USA Championships.

This past season, the Panthers won their first Big South Conference Tournament title since 2017 and earned the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Panthers went 10-8-2 overall with an 8-2 mark in the Big South before claiming the league tournament title with an overtime victory over top-seed and host Campbell University.

In the 2020-21 season, played in the spring due to the pandemic, Fontaine led HPU into the national rankings. The Panthers went 10-1, including an 8-0 record in Big South play and a perfect 9-0 mark in regular-season action. High Point was ranked as high as 24th in both the Top-Drawer Soccer and College Soccer News media polls and received votes in the United Soccer Coaches poll, the highest rankings in program history. The Panthers were ranked as high as number eight in the United Soccer Coaches Southeast Region ranking.

In 2019, the Panthers posted their first unbeaten season in Big South games, going 8-0-2 to claim the league's regular-season crown, quite a turnaround from the 5-10-4 (Big South: 3-4-3) season record in Fontaine's first year at the helm.

Fontaine was named Big South Coach of the Year in both 2019 and 2020-21 following those unbeaten conference seasons and regular-season crowns.

Fontaine spent the last 13 seasons with the Panthers. Before taking over as head coach in 2018, she served as associate head coach from 2013-2017 and was an assistant coach from 2009-12. She has been a part of the coaching staff for five of HPU's seven NCAA Tournament trips and has helped the Panthers to four Big South regular-season titles and five tournament championships. Fontaine was part of a coaching staff that set program records for wins in a season (13, twice), conference wins in a season (8, four times), and longest winning streak (10, 2020-21)

Fontaine started her coaching career as an assistant coach in 2008 for one season at her alma mater, Francis Marion University. A three-year letterwinner for the Patriots, Fontaine (formerly Sutphin) played in 33 career matches with 20 starts, recording three goals and 11 assists. She served as team captain during her senior season and ranked in the top 25 in the nation in assists as a junior.

She began her college career at West Virginia University, playing in five games as a freshman for a Mountaineer squad that went 15-6-0 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Fontaine earned a bachelor's degree in mass communication from Francis Marion in December 2007 and a Master of Science in Sports Management from American Public University in 2010.

A native of Davidsonville, Maryland, Fontaine is a product of South River High School located in Edgewater, Maryland.

She holds a premier diploma from the United Soccer Coaches Association and is an assistant director of coaching at the Piedmont Triad Football Club, coaching five North Carolina State Cup Champions.

Fontaine and her husband, Keith, have a son, Kaden. Fontaine's twin sister, Jacque Sutphin, also played at FMU.

From an article in TopDrawerSoccer.com about Coach Langan

Those who perhaps don’t pay the closest attention to men’s college soccer might be surprised to learn the Charlotte 49ers are something of a power player in the national game. By the time then-coach Jeremy Gunn led Charlotte to within one game of a national title in 2011, they’d already reached a College Cup once in 1996. When Gunn left for Stanford in 2012, his understudy Kevin Langan took over the clipboard, and the 49ers have hardly missed a beat. Entering the 2017 season, Langan’s Charlotte teams are a combined 64-24-12, giving him the program’s highest overall winning percentage in history. In those five years, the stylish 49ers have reached the NCAA tourney all five years and garnered national seeds three times. Langan’s benefitted from a robust local soccer scene and tremendous facilities, and he’s helped build out Charlotte into a machine.

OTHER COACHING EXPERIENCE

In 2012, Langan coached the Charlotte Soccer Academy U-16 team to the United States Soccer Federation Academy Finals Week in Houston (top 8 teams in the country) for the first time in the club’s history. Charlotte was one of only three non-MLS Academies to make finals week.

Before moving to Charlotte, Langan spent four years as the head boys’ coach of the Classics Elite Soccer Academy in San Antonio, Texas (now called the San Antonio Scorpions USSF Academy). He also coached the Classics Elite Soccer Academy’s U-18 USSF Academy team in 2008-2009.

PLAYING CAREER

As a collegiate player, Langan was a standout player for the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas for the 2004-05 seasons. He captained them to a number one national ranking and the NCAA Division II Elite Eight in 2004. In his two seasons at Incarnate Word, he was named Regional Defensive Player of the Year, Student-Athlete of the Year and the International Graduate Student of the Year.

The Jersey, United Kingdom native also represented Great Britain at two World University Games; in 2001 in Beijing, China and then captaining the team in Daegu, South Korea in 2003. He was also selected to play for the England National Futsal Team on a Tour of Portugal in 2003. In 2001 he helped lead Bath University to become British National Champions, for the first time in school history, scoring in the final.

In England, Langan played professionally with Bristol City FC for six seasons and Forest Green Rovers FC for four years. For Bristol City he made his Cup debut against Swansea City FC and his League debut versus Wigan Athletic as an 18-year old. During his time at Bristol City FC he played in the team that won promotion to the Championship in 1998. He also played against Premier League sides, Liverpool FC, Southampton FC and West Ham United.

EDUCATION AND COACHING LICENSES

Langan graduated with a “First Class Honors” Bachelor’s Degree in Coaching Education and Sports Performance from the University of Bath (England) in 2004 and with a Master’s Degree in Sports Management from the University of the Incarnate Word in 2006. He also holds his USSF Coaching “A” License.

Shane Carew is entering his second season as an Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator of the Niners after being added to the Charlotte men's soccer staff in January 2022.

Carew is a Charlotte men's soccer alum, playing for the program from 2000-03, earning All-Conference accolades three times during his playing days.

"We are extremely excited Shane will be joining us at his alma mater," Langan said. "He has a great passion for Charlotte soccer. He brings great college coaching experience and with his warm personality will be a close ally with the players as they navigate the student-athlete journey."

In his first full season in the Queen City, Carew was responsible for helping to bring in one of the top recruiting classes in the country ahead of the 2022 campaign. He also helped lead CLT to its best start in program history with wins in each of its first seven matches of the season, while pushing the squad to help Head Man Kevin Langan become the winningest head coach in program history.

Carew has had previous college coaching stops at Elon, San Jose State and Stanford prior to his return to the Queen City.

As an assistant at Elon, he helped lead the Phoenix to one of their most successful seasons in program history in 2013 when they downed a pair of top-10 opponents and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Following his time in Elon, Carew journeyed out to San Jose, California where he worked at San Jose State for a period of three seasons, before taking on the role as head coach at Cal State Monteray Bay in 2017 and 2018.
