The Asbury University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced in November of 2022 that Zach Welch had been named head coach for the women’s soccer program and will begin his duties December 1.


Welch served as the associate head coach of the AU men’s soccer team during the 2022 season, after holding the position of full-time assistant men’s soccer coach since 2016. A standout midfielder for the Eagles from 2010-2013, Welch was a four-year starter and a two-time team captain. He helped AU to a conference championship in 2012. He also received the 2013 Gamble Walker Award presented to Asbury’s outstanding senior men’s student-athlete.


The Port Orange, Fla., native graduated from Asbury in 2013 with a bachelor’s in Exercise Science and later earned a master’s in organizational leadership from Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota in 2017.


“I am humbled and grateful for the opportunity to lead the women’s soccer program at Asbury University,” Welch said. “First and foremost, I thank God for continually blessing Victoria and me on this journey. We are excited to see what God has in store for AU women’s soccer. A special thanks to Mark Whitworth, Ben Andrews and Erin Ferguson for entrusting me with this opportunity and seeing the potential in me to lead this program.”

Welch has been unwavering in his commitment to developing his craft as a soccer coach for the past nine years. He holds the US Soccer C Coaching License and the United Coaches Association Advanced Regional Diploma. Welch served three seasons as the Girls Soccer Head Coach at East Jessamine High School from 2014-16. He also brings extensive club coaching experience to his new role, having served as the U18 Head Coach for the Central Kentucky Soccer Club from 2017-2019. Welch is currently serving as the U17 and U15 Head Coach for the CKY Storm this season.


“The past six seasons as a full-time coach under Ben Andrews, has shaped me into the person and coach I am today,” Welch added. “I am truly grateful to those student-athletes and coaches who were a part of that process. I also want to thank my wife, Victoria, for her unending support and encouragement. We are beyond excited for this next step in our lives to create a successful program on and off the field, and to sustain that for the seasons to come. Go Eagles and I am thankful to continue to be a part of TeamAU.”


Welch, who has served as AU’s reserve team head coach since 2019, is credited for building a strong developmental program at Asbury and helping form a state-wide league to enhance the competitive experience. In addition to his coaching duties at Asbury, Welch coordinated event management for the Athletics Department from 2018-2020.


In Welch's first season leading Asbury women's soccer in 2023, the Eagles went 2-9-4. In a season that included four ties, AU lost three matches by only one goal. AU featured multiple encouraging underclassmen with upperclassman planning to return in 2024.

The 2022 season featured upperclassmen and a strong group of underclassmen coming together for eight Asbury victories. Coach Andrews led AU to tie 2020 for their most wins since 2018. AU fell in the NCCAA Mideast Regional to No. 1 seed Campbellsville in PK's after a 0-0 regular time finish.


In 2021 AU won four games and finished the year just short in the NCCAA Mideast Regional Tournament against Oakland City, 1-3. In the 2020 Asbury men's soccer season Coach Andrews led the Eagles to an eight-win season including a six-game winning streak. AU fell in the quarterfinal of the River States Conference Tournament to Oakland City.


In 2019, the Eagles landed a 6-13 overall record. It was a season riddled with injuries and setbacks but they saw off a fantastic senior class let by Captain Noah Welch. In 2020, AU looks to retool and bring a deep and talented squad. In 2018, Asbury collected a 9-9-1 overall record, but posted a solid 5-2-1 record in River States Conference play. The Eagles earned a home match in the Quarterfinals of the RSC Tournament, but were eliminated with a 3-1 loss.


In 2017, AU finished the season with an 11-6-1 for its highest winning percentage in a season since 2012, earning the No. 3 seed in the RSC Tournament. In 2016, the Eagles finished with a 11-8-1 record, the highest win total since 2013. AU scored the most goals (70) since 2011 and 2012 when they netted 77 goals and gave up the fewest goals since 2011.


In 2015, the KIAC expanded to seven men's teams with the addition of West Virginia Tech and Ohio Christian to the conference, strengthening the competition in conference. Andrews and the Eagles faced one of their toughest schedules ever and were eventually ousted by eventual National Champion Rio Grande in the semifinals.


In 2014 Andrews and the Eagles went 8-11 with an even 2-2 record in KIAC play during the regular season. They were ousted in the KIAC Tournament Semifinals via 1-0 overtime loss to Point Park. The Eagles finished 11-8 in 2013, advancing to the KIAC finals but falling just short of the fourth title in program history. After tying a school record with 14 wins in 2011, Andrews' squad put together a 12-7-1 season in 2012. In that 2011 14-win, record-setting season, Andrews led the Eagles to a share of their third straight regular season KIAC title and the third KIAC Championship in program history. The Eagles tied a program record with 14 wins.. The Eagles fell one goal shy of advancing to the NAIA Tournament with a 3-2 loss to Roberts Wesleyan in the play in game for the National Tournament.


During his time as Head Coach, Andrews has coached numerous All-Conference Players, including five Conference Players of the Year. He has was also named KIAC Coach of the Year in 2011.


Andrews had previously served four years as an assistant with the program. During his stint as assistant, Andrews helped guide the team to an NCCAA Regional championship, NCCAA National Tournament appearance, KIAC Tournament championship, and NAIA Regional Tournament appearance.


Before serving as assistant coach, Andrews graduated in 2006 as a four-year letterman of the Eagle soccer program who served three years as team captain. Andrews was named to the KIAC All-Conference first team squad and first team NCCAA Region XII All-Regional throughout his career as well as earning NCCAA All-American honorable mention honors his senior year.


Originally from Deltona, Fla., Andrews left the sunshine state and a very decorative and successful high school and club career to join the team at Asbury. Andrews also serves as the Assistant Athletic Director as well as part-time faculty teaching classes in the School of Applied Health & Sciences. He lives in Wilmore with his wife Emily and their sons, Cooper (8) and Griffin (3).
