Brianne Smithson

Brianne Smithson has been the head coach of the Polar Bear women's soccer team since 2012.

She enjoyed immediate success at Bowdoin, reaching the NCAA Tournament in her first four campaigns. In her first season at Bowdoin, Smithson lead the Polar Bears to one of the finest seasons in school history with an 11-4-4 mark. The nationally ranked Polar Bears advanced to the second round of NCAA Tournament play following an appearance in the NESCAC Championship with Smithson earning Conference Co-Coach of the Year honors. The Polar Bears have repeated that success in 2013, 2014, and 2015, receiving NCAA bids every season and continue to be among the top teams in the region, winning 65% of their matches under Smithson.

At Bowdoin, she has guided multiple All-NESCAC and All-New England players in addition to four All-Americans during her tenure. In addition, Bowdoin has consistently ranked among the top in the nation in both the United Soccer Coaches' Team Ethics and Sportsmanship Awards and Team Academic honors.

Prior to Bowdoin, Smithson led St. Mary's (Md.) to three Capital Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Championship Tournament finals (2006, 2008, and 2011) in six seasons at the helm of the Seahawks, collecting the school's first-ever CAC championship crown in 2008 and earning CAC Coach of the Year honors that same year. In 2008, Smithson was named the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Mid-Atlantic Region Coach of the Year after helping the Seahawks achieve their first-ever NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship Tournament berth.

Smithson also served as the department's Senior Woman Administrator and as the liaison between athletics and the Office of Advancement. She spearheaded the formation of the Seahawk Alliance, the department's booster organization, and was the athletic representative at the newly formed Staff Senate.
