Claire Scanlan

Claire Scanlan will begin her second season as the head coach of the Bryn Mawr soccer program in the Fall of 2024.


Prior to Bryan Mawr, Scanlan spent three seasons as the assistant women’s soccer coach at Temple University where she worked under head coach Nick Bochette. Prior to that she was the associate head coach at the University at Albany where she helped the Great Danes capture an America East Conference championship in 2018. Before her time at UAlbany, Scanlan was the assistant coach at Oakland University where she helped the Golden Grizzlies win the Horizon League with an athletic department high 3.59 GPA.


Scanlan started her college coaching career at Troy University where she was the associate head coach and helped lead the team to five consecutive conference appearances. She also served on the international stage as the head coach of Ireland’s Under-23 women’s national team and was an assistant coach for Ireland's Under-17 women's World Cup team. Scanlan's previous coaching role was as the head coach of the Female Football Academy at Filton College, part of Bristol’s Academy of Sport in England. Under her leadership, Filton College won back-to-back National Championships, along with two National Cup Championships and was awarded the Female Football ‘Academy of the Year’ in 2007.


As a player, Scanlan spent over 15 years on the Irish Women's National Team. She has competed in European and World Cup qualifiers and was named the Irish WNT Player of the Year in 1999 and is a recent recipient of the Football Association of Ireland ‘Legend’ Award.


Scanlan played at Mercyhurst University (formerly Mercyhurst College) where she was a two-time All-American and the Conference Player of the Year and was named the Division II National Player of the Year in 1995. Scanlan was inducted into the Mercyhurst University Athletics Hall of Fame in 2015.


Following her collegiate career Scanlan played professionally in the Japanese "L" League with Oki FC Winds. She also won a National Championship playing with Springfield Sirens in the W-League and continued that success with the Memphis Mercury where she captained the highly regarded W-league team. Scanlan's playing career continued in Europe where she played with Leeds United and Bristol Academy in the English Women's Premier league and helped guide Bristol to a top four finish in the league and three FA Cup semi-final appearances in four years.


Scanlan holds the USSF A coaching license, the United Soccer Coaches Premier Diploma, and the UEFA B coaching license.

John Sanger

John Sanger starts his sixth season with the Bryn Mawr soccer program in the Fall of 2023. Coach Sanger joined the program in the Spring of 2018 and has contributed in a variety of roles to help raise the level of play throughout the program.


Prior to joining the Bryn Mawr staff, Sanger had an accomplished 5 year stint at West Chester Henderson High School as an assistant with the Women’s Varsity. During this time he headed up the team’s defensive efforts and helped guide 20 players to all-league status. The highlight of Coach Sanger’s time at Henderson was winning 3 consecutive league championships from 2015-2017. During this time the team recorded 27 shutouts and held their opponents to an average of less than one goal per game.


At the club level, Sanger has successfully coached both boys and girls teams for over 25 years. In addition to helping players develop their skills and a love for the game, many of Coach Sanger’s former players have moved on to productive college careers in NCAA Divisions I, II and III. He currently coaches at FC Delco as a member of the club’s ECNL girl’s staff and was named the club’s coach of the year in 2016.


Coach Sanger has enjoyed playing soccer at a variety of levels throughout his life. He was part of the prestigious Delco Select program as a youth player and was a member of Strath Haven High School’s inaugural soccer team where he scored the first goal in the school’s history. Coach Sanger has enthusiastically participated in amateur leagues in Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Germany.


An active adult learner, Coach Sanger holds several coaching degrees and licenses including the prestigious UEFA B license which he earned in Germany, an Associate’s Degree in German Coaching from the Thüringer Fußball-Verband, the United Soccer Coaches Premier, Advanced National and Level 2 Goalkeeping diplomas as well as a “C” and National Youth license from the United States Soccer Federation.


A 1988 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Coach Sanger majored in American History and minored in German Literature. He went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Secondary Education from Widener University and is currently employed as a teacher with the Chester County Intermediate Unit.


Coach Sanger and his wife Kathleen have lived in West Chester for over 25 years and have 3 adult sons who live in the Philadelphia Area (Andrew, Alex, and Ian). Both Alex (Ursinus College, ‘19) and Ian (Ursinus College, ‘22) were members of the Ursinus soccer program and played in the Centennial Conference together.

Matthew Duffey

Matthew Duffey will begin his first season as an assistant coach of the Bryn Mawr Soccer Program in the Fall of 2024. Duffey has spent the past 18 years coaching club soccer at Upper Moreland Soccer Club coaching both boys and girls travel soccer.


Duffey has spent three seasons as the head coach of the boys’ varsity soccer program at Upper Moreland High School leading them to a District One 3A playoff bid in his second season. For the last two seasons he was the head coach of the girls’ varsity program at New Hope-Solebury High School, achieving a District One 2A championship in his second season.


As a player, Duffey played club soccer with Springfield DELCO. He was a three-year starter for the Springfield High School Men's Varsity program and played two years for Division III Rochester Institute of Technology before turning to coaching.


Coach Duffey holds a USSF D coaching license, United Soccer Coaches Advanced National diploma as well as a Level 3 Goalkeeper diploma and other Special Topics diplomas.
