Amanda Evans

Amanda Evans enters her third season at Mary Baldwin for the 2020-21 season.


Evans comes to Staunton from Compton College in Compton, California where she coached from 2015 until 2018. With innovation and enthusiasm, Evans led Compton to the best record in the school’s history.


Prior to leading the Tartars, Evans coached at Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin, which is also a NCAA Division III program. There Evans brought the team from the bottom of the conference to the first round of the playoffs in three seasons.


In 2009, Evans started the women’s program at Salt Lake Community College in Salt Lake City, Utah. Within two seasons, the team was 15-4-0 and was ranked 11th out of 60 teams in the west in the National Intramural and Recreational Sports Association. Always making academics a priority, the team posted the highest GPA in the department.


The Wisconsin native holds a premier diploma from United Soccer Coaches (formerly NSCAA). She played at Hawaii Pacific University and had semi-pro training in Utah. She earned a master of science in special education at Western Governors University,and a bachelor’s in exercise and sports science and teaching physical education at the University of Utah.


Evans joins the MBU family along with her husband, two daughters, two sons, and their labradoodle.

Tony Evans

Anthony Evans joins the Mary Baldwin University staff as assistant coach for the women’s soccer program in 2018.


He comes to MBU from Long Beach, CA bringing over 10 years of collegiate coaching experience. He most recently served as an assistant and goalkeeper coach at Compton College where he helped rebuild the women’s soccer program and increase student engagement in the classroom earning the highest team GPA in the school's history.


Coach Evans is an active member of the United Soccer Coaches association and has been involved with the Olympic Development Program (ODP) at the state and regional level. He has earned the Advanced National Diploma (USC), Director of Coaching (USC), Special Topics (USC) and Goalkeeper Diplomas (USC).


Prior to Compton College, Evans was first assistant and goalkeeping coach at Northland College in Wisconsin. He also was part of facilitating the start up of the women’s soccer program at Salt Lake Community College.

Samantha Honig

Coach Honig joins the Fighting Squirrels soccer family in the spring of 2021. She brings a wealth of experience including both a Division 1 playing career and premier level coaching. She is originally from Northern Virginia where she accumulated over 15 years of premier playing experience.


She went on to play NCAA Division I soccer as a goalkeeper at the University of Richmond from 2000-2004. She graduated with a degree in Criminal Justice. She later received her Masters in Justice Administration from Johnson and Wales University. Coach Honig continues to be involved in all levels of coaching within the region.


She has been coaching at the U11-U16 premier level with Augusta United Soccer Club for over six years. In addition, she holds a USSF “D” License and the United Soccer Coaches Level I Goalkeeper Diploma.


She currently resides in Staunton with her dog Dagney.

Erik Recke

Erik Recke enters his first season as an assistant coach with the men’s and women’s soccer programs.


Recke recently graduated from Washington and Lee University in May of 2021 with a degree in economics. He was a standout defender for the men’s soccer team all four years, serving as a captain in his junior and senior seasons. While playing, he received third team and 1st team All-ODAC selections as well as the inaugural United Soccer Coaches Award of Distinction in his senior year.


Recke is working towards getting his MBA at MBU.
