Chris Brown

Chris Brown enters his third season on the Hilltop in 2023 after being named the seventh head coach of the San Francisco men's soccer program on May 25, 2021. Formerly the associate head coach at Saint Mary's in Moraga, Brown follows Leonard Griffin, Eddie Soto, Erik Visser, Gus Donoghue, Bob Braghette and the legendary Stephen Negoesco. The historic program boasts six national championships (four NCAA championships) and 35 West Coast Conference titles as well as producing 45 All-Americans.

Through the first few years under Brown, the Dons have excelled in the classroom as the men's soccer team has tallied a 3.6 cumulative GPA since Brown took over in 2021.

In 2022, the Dons finished 7-6-4 overall, which included three Defensive Player of the Week and one Offensive Player of the Week honors. After the conclusion of the season, four Dons earned All-WCC honors and 10 Dons were awarded with WCC All-Academic honors.

In his first year at USF, forward Nonso Adimabua and midfielder Tobias Wangerud earned All-WCC honors while Adimabua was also named to the 2021 NCAA Division I Men's West Region Second Team.

Brown's career has been highlighted by stellar goalkeeper play and recruiting. Making the short trip across the Bay, Brown came to the Hilltop after serving two tours of duty on Adam Cooper's staff at Saint Mary's. Originally, he was the associate head coach from 2011 to 2016 before his second stint with the Gaels from 2019 through the spring 2021 season. Brown played an integral role in recruiting the St. Mary’s teams that went 40-4-3 from 2018 to the 2021 spring season. Overall, SMC had the best winning percentage in college soccer during this three-year period. Prior to his time with the Gaels, he served as an assistant coach for the NASL San Francisco Deltas.

While in Moraga, Brown's tenure was highlighted by stellar goalkeeper play. During his time at SMC, the Gaels tallied seven all-league keepers, including two WCC Goalkeeper of the Year awards. Brown's best work might have come in the development of Andre Rawls, who began his career as a walk-on and ended as the program's first WCC Goalkeeper of the Year. Rawls the became the first Gael in program history to be selected in the Major League Soccer Superdraft.

In 2019, Brown helped Gaels' goalkeeper Remi Prieur take home WCC Goalkeeper of the Year honors in addition to being named a Second Team All-American by the United Soccer Coaches Association. Prieur was drafted 47th overall in the 2020 MLS Superdraft by Sporting KC just months later.

In between stints in Moraga, Brown served as an assistant coach for the San Francisco Deltas. His lone season with the Deltas proved to be a memorable one: they defeated the New York Cosmos, 2-0, in front of 10,000 fans at Kezar Stadium to win the NASL Soccer Bowl.

While with the Deltas, Brown guided keeper Romuald Peiser to one of the best seasons in his twenty year professional career, leading to a nomination for NASL Player of the Year.

In college, Brown was a three-year captain during his time at Boston College from 2004 to 2008. In 2007, he captained the Eagles to the school's first-ever ACC regular season and tournament titles. That season, BC was also the first overall seed in the NCAA Tournament. Brown was also named 2008 ACC Goalkeeper of the Year.

In 2007, Brown was also part of the United States Olympic Team pool before the games in Beijing, China. After college, Brown played professionally in Norway.

Brown’s brother Adin was an eleven-year soccer professional and is now the current goalkeeper coach for the San Jose Earthquakes. Brown’s dad, Adin Brown Sr., was a football captain for Marv Levy at William & Mary and a 1968 draft pick for the Denver Broncos as a linebacker. Brown resides in Russian Hill with his wife Jess.
