Martyn Keen

GORHAM, Maine – Martyn Keen, a veteran coach with ties to Maine club and college soccer as well as years of experience at the international level, has been named the next head coach of the two-time defending Little East Conference Champion University of Southern Maine Huskies’ women’s soccer team. University of Southern Maine Director of Athletics Al Bean made the announcement as the Huskies’ ready for the Fall 2024 season at Hannaford Field. Keen officially begins his duties on Monday, July 15, 2024. Keen replaces Seth Benjamin ’01 who left the program in May after six years (five seasons) (2018-19, 2021-2023).

“I'm truly excited to welcome Martyn to our coaching staff on a full-time basis,” said University of Southern Maine Director of Athletics Al Bean. “Martyn has done an outstanding job working with our goalkeepers in recent seasons, and has contributed greatly to the success of both our women's and men's programs. He brings a wealth of coaching experience to our program and has been actively involved in the recruitment and placement of prospective student-athletes for many years. Martyn understands the game on a very high level and is an outstanding communicator and teacher of the game. He has extensive experience as an administrator, having served as a program director, classroom teacher and has coached coaches for many years. I'm confident that Martyn will be an excellent addition to our staff and will provide a positive culture for our student-athletes to excel on and off the field of play.”

With decades of coaching experience, Keen spent the 2023 season on the sidelines of Hannaford Field with both the men’s and women’s program as an assistant coach. Prior to joining the Huskies’ staff, Keen spent four years as an assistant coach and goalkeeper coach with the Saint Joseph’s College (Maine) men’s team, helping guide the program to a GNAC title in 2021. Since 2008, Keen has served as the Director of Coaching at Seacoast United Maine with duties including college placement for athletes, establishing performance metrics, and coaching mentorship. Keen also worked in the Cumberland/North Yarmouth Maine School Administrative District from 1996 through 2006 as an educator and served as the NYA boys’ head coach, leading the team to a State Championship in 2018.

“I felt privileged to be a part of the 2023 coaching staff, and I believe the team played some of the best soccer I’ve seen from a Maine program. To now be given the honor to lead this amazing group of young women is an incredible opportunity and one which I intend to grasp with both hands,” said Keen. “This team is capable of great success, and even greater levels of play. I have tremendous belief in this group – the roster is deep, and if everyone buys in and plays their part the sky is truly the limit. I would like to thank the search committee, University administration and team members for this incredible opportunity. I would also like to extend my gratitude to my coaching colleagues Will Pike (Saint Joseph’s College), Adrian Dubois (San Diego State) and Scott Atherley (UMaine) who supported my application.”

A native of North Wales in the United Kingdom, Keen enjoyed success playing in the Welsh Football League system before pursuing his higher education degrees. Keen earned his bachelor’s degree in Education Studies from the University of Staffordshire (United Kingdom) in 1983, and went on to earn a Master of Science in Sports Coaching from the United States Sports Academy in 2006, and a Certification in Exercise Physiology from the American College of Sports Medicine in 2007.
