Wittenberg University announced the hiring of Head Coach Dwight Burgess to become the 10th head coach in program history in 2016.

Burgess brought an extensive soccer resume with him, including a stint as an assistant coach at Ohio State with the men's program and a decade at Capital University as the head coach of the men's team and eight years as the head coach of the women's team.

During his tenure at Capital, Burgess led the men's program to the 2007 and 2008 Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) regular season championships, and he guided the team to the 2009 OAC Tournament championship. The 2009 team also qualified for the NCAA Division III Tournament – the first postseason appearance in program history. He was named NSCAA Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year and OSCA Division III Coach of the Year in 2007. Burgess was named OAC Coach of the Year in 2005 and again in 2009.

Burgess guided the Capital women's team to the 2004 OAC regular season title, and the 2006 and 2007 OAC Tournament titles. The 2006 and 2007 teams also earned berths in the NCAA Division III Tournament, and Burgess was named OAC Women's Soccer Coach of the Year in 2006. Combined between the men's and women's programs, Burgess stacked up a career record at Capital of 186-145-33, including an 87-63-12 OAC record.

He also was nominated for the NSCAA National Division III Coach of the Year Award. Off the field, Burgess served a four-year term as the Great Lakes Region Chair for the NCAA Division III National Championship Committee.

Burgess, who was inducted into the Capital University Athletics Hall of Fame in 2022, has also coached at all levels of the youth game, including high school soccer, club soccer, and as a member of the Ohio South Olympic Development Program State Staff. In addition, Burgess has served as a clinician in various capacities on behalf of the NSCAA, Columbus Crew SC, and Major League Soccer.

An accomplished player, Burgess split his college career between DePauw University and the University of Dayton. He was named team captain for a pair of teams that advanced to regional tournaments, he participated in international friendlies, and he was selected to development camps for the United States Men's National Program on two occasions. Burgess holds a bachelor's degree from Wright State University and a master's degree from Ohio State University.

Burgess is an accomplished broadcaster as well, serving more than 20 seasons as the TV play-by-play broadcaster for Columbus Crew SC. He also called action for a variety of national and international soccer events, including XM Satellite Radio's 2006 FIFA World Cup coverage.
