Showcase tips

A showcase is the best chance your athlete will get to be seen by college coaches in person. Turning up and playing well is only half of it. Here is what to do before, during and after the weekend so the right coaches are watching.

The showcase timeline

Doing these in order matters more than doing any one of them well. Pick a step to see what it involves.

Step 1 · Weeks out

Build your profile

Your profile is what a coach sees after they read your email. Fill in the whole thing: position, grad year, club and high school team, height, GPA and test scores, and video if you have it.

A half-finished profile reads as a half-interested athlete. This is the one job you can finish today, months before the event.

Step 2 · Four weeks out

See who is coming

Every showcase publishes the college coaches who have registered to attend. Open that list and mark the programs you would genuinely consider, not just the ones you have heard of.

This list is the whole reason the weekend is worth the airfare. It tells you exactly who is going to be standing on the sideline.

Step 3 · Three weeks out

Contact coaches

Write to every coach on your list. Keep it short, say why their program specifically, and link your profile. A coach with a thousand athletes to sort through will remember the one who wrote first.

If a coach does not know you are interested, the odds of them finding you among hundreds of players are close to zero.

Send your schedule

Once the schedule is posted, write again. List your games with field and time, name the one you most want them at, and give them your jersey number, your position and your team colors.

Check the coach list once more before you send. Programs register late, and the newcomers have heard from nobody.

Sending a game schedule
Step 5 · Game day

Game day

The work is done. Warm up properly, play your own game, and let your parents handle the logistics. Coaches are watching how you respond to a bad call and a bad touch as much as a good one.

Between games, be where you said you would be. A coach who came looking for you should be able to find you.

Follow up

Write to every coach you contacted, whether or not you saw them at your game. Thank them, say how you thought it went, and ask what they would want to see from you next.

Most athletes skip this step entirely. That is exactly why it works.
