Alex Smith

Alex Smith joined Bluefield University Athletics the summer of 2022. Alex is no stranger to Appalachian Athletic Conference as he is set to take the Rams to new heights. He came to Bluefield University after serving as the Head Women’s Soccer Coach at the University of Maine at Fort Kent for three years. Prior to UMFK, Smith served as an Assistant Men’s Coach for the University of Northwestern Ohio and as the Graduate Assistant for Union College (Ky.) Men’s Soccer program.


Smith also has experience playing semi-professionally in the National Premier Soccer League for Knoxville (Tenn.) Force, During Smith’s time at UMFK, he led the Bengals to win the USCAA D1 National Championship Title in 2019, followed by a USCAA Championship Runner-up Title in 2021. As the Head Coach, Smith grew the team roster to a program-record of 35 student-athletes in the span of one year. Smith specializes in international recruiting, and continued by recruiting and retaining student athletes from 11 different nationalities to represent UMFK. Among those were Youth and Senior National Team Players that played in the Concacaf, U-20 World Cup, and International Friendlies. Through his years at UMFK, Smith had eight All-Americans, 13 All-Academic players, one USCAA National Tournament MVP, and consistent team GPAs that surpassed the 3.2 mark each year.


Previous to UMFK, Smith assisted Tyler Brock to win the NAIA Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Regular Season Title with an overall record of 14-4-2 (10-1 Conference) in 2018. The program had three NAIA All-Americans, four All-Conference players, Defensive Player of the Year, four All-Ohio Academic honorees, one NAIA Scholar-Athlete, and three All Mideast Region awards.


During Smith’s time at Union College he won two Appalachian Athletic Conference Regular Season Championships, one AAC Tournament Championship, and was e and was an AAC Tournament runner-up Title. Between titles, the program accumulated several All-American Honorable Mention Awards, AAC First and Second Team Awards, AAC All-Academic Awards, and AAC All-Tournament Selections.


Smith spent his collegiate playing career at Union College before his transition as a coach. Under Tyler Brock, Oniqueky Samuels and Jonathan Shaw, Smith led the NAIA with Game Winning Goals in 2014, along with being ranked eighth in the NAIA for Goals Scored. Additionally, he was named an All-American Honorable Mention, AAC First Team, AAC Golden Boot Winner, and AAC Offensive Player of the Year. Smith’s overall record representing Union College is 69-27-10. Smith ranks as the fifth All-Time Goal Scorer in Union College Men’s Soccer history and was named 2014-2015 Male Athlete of the Year. Smith holds a Masters in Business Administration and a Masters in Education; Teacher Leader.
